Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

Our Commitment to Positive Behaviour Support

At Aarons Children’s Residential Care, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is at the heart of how we care for and support the children who live with us. It’s not about controlling behaviour — it’s about understanding it.

We know that behaviour is a form of communication, often shaped by past experiences, trauma, or unmet emotional needs. That’s why we don’t ask, “What’s wrong with this child?” but instead, “What’s happened to them?” and “What are they trying to tell us?

PBS gives us a framework to respond in a way that is compassionate, consistent, and focused on building trusting relationships. Our aim is always to connect first, and guide from a place of empathy.

How PBS Shapes Our Daily Work

Change happens when children feel safe — and that safety comes from predictability, connection, and care. We use PBS to spot patterns and identify what might trigger or intensify difficult behaviours. This could be anything from the environment to how we communicate or even the energy in the room. Once we understand these factors, we adapt the way we work — whether that means changing the routine, offering different ways to communicate, or simply creating a calmer atmosphere. Over time, we help children build their own skills to manage big feelings, offering them tools for self-regulation in a way that makes sense for them.

Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs)

Every child at Aarons has their own Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) — a practical, personalised plan created together with the child, their key worker, therapists, and other professionals.

These plans are:

  • Child-focused and easy to understand

  • Regularly updated to reflect the child’s needs

  • Based on what works best for them — emotionally, socially, and sensorially

The BSP helps everyone supporting the child understand the purpose behind certain behaviours — whether it’s a way of coping, asking for help, avoiding distress, or staying in control.

It also outlines how we can best support the child:

  • What helps them feel safe

  • What calms them down

  • How to respond when things feel overwhelming

The goal isn’t just to get through difficult moments — it’s to build long-term, positive changes that children can take with them wherever they go: at school, with family, or in future homes.

Our Focus

A Better Quality of Life

Above all, PBS at Aarons is about improving each child’s quality of life.

We want children to feel:

  • Seen and heard, not judged

  • Supported and empowered, not controlled

By creating a consistent, caring environment, we help children feel safe enough to take steps forward — to try new ways of expressing themselves, to build trust with others, and to grow emotionally at their own pace.

We understand that meaningful change takes time. But with compassion, structure, and steady support, we walk alongside each child as they begin to feel more in control of their world — and more hopeful about their future.
